Injections
Injections can be used for both pain relief and for diagnosing the cause of back pain. They are typically considered as an option to treat back pain after a course of medications and physical therapy, and prior to deciding on a surgical option. They can be more effective than oral prescriptions since they deliver medication directly to the site of the injury or disorder. Typically a steroid is used which has an anti-inflammatory effect. Relief may be temporary or longer-lasting, depending on the type of injection. Injections providing temporary relief can be localized to help pinpoint pain and identify the specific area of the anatomy that is the source of the pain.
For some procedures, a local anesthetic may be used in addition to the therapeutic injection. Common types of injections for spine pain include an epidural, selective nerve root block (SNRB), facet joint block, facet rhizotomy, and sacroiliac root block.
